They depend on each other. Without night, there is no day, without hot there is not cold. It makes possible the choices we make on the scale of life between good and evil, right and wrong, love and fear, generosity and greed, truth and lies.

The black spot represents yin and the white spot represents yang. They are opposites of each other.
Yin: Feminine, Dark, Cold, Passive, Night, Moon
Yang: Masculine, Light, Hot, Active, Day, Sun

Yin and Yang is the changing combination of negative and positive which keeps the world spinning and creates 'Qi' ? the life force energy.

What happens when there is an imbalance between Yin and Yang? This imbalance will cause fatigue, lack of motivation and so on. When they are balanced they perform perfect harmony but one element is more dominant than the other then disharmony occurs.

Fengshui Tips for the Office

If you have your back to the door, you could be betrayed, back stabbed or cheated. Work luck is missing.

Always sit with the wall behind you, if you seek co-operation and support of colleagues and bosses.

Get rid of open shelves that may be sending poisonous arrows towards you. Convert them into cupboards by installing doors.

Do not sit facing a pillar. This blocks your progress at work. Try to re-orientate so that the pillar is behind you.

Place flowers or a small plant on your desk so that they are between you and any corner wall or pillar edge that may be sending poisonous breath.

You should not have any cactus or sharp looking plants as it will cause 'sha qi' in the office. Those tiny arrows can cause bad luck to build up and eventually hurt you.

Never sit directly below an exposed overhead beam which can give you headaches and neck pain.

Fengshui Tips for the Home

There should be no shoes or slippers lying around outside the main door of your house. Remove it if you can. Allow that space at the main door to be free and clear.

In the kitchen, ensure that opposite your stove there is no refrigerator, washing machine, washbasin and toilet. The fire and water crash causing family members to have disagreements. Keeping your cupboard, your larder, your fridge well stocked implies abundance, richness and even generosity.

Try not to have your child sit straight in front of a window. Your child will lack in concentration. Try to have their back to the wall when they write. It is important there should be a solid wall behind a children's writing table. This allows the child to have support so that he can sit there and study longer rather than for only half an hour and then they tend to move about because there is no solid wall behind their back.

Children sleeping under double bunk beds, beams are certainly not ideal. The pressure from above can give them headaches and disturb their night's rest and being in a cave. This may means saving space, but the child sleeping underneath will not have ?fresh qi? and may affect his health.

Try not to allow children to sleep on mattresses on the floor. The reason is: 'Qi' is not able to flow underneath and this may cause them to fall sick frequently. Ideally, 'qi' should circulate around the mattress where children sleep to allow them to be healthy.

Your bed should always have a solid wall behind you. Try to position your bed as far from the door as possible but at the same time with a good view of the door from where you sleep. Make sure that the bed has a good strong headboard to protect your Qi while you sleep and avoid sleeping with your head facing an open window, as this will drain away your Qi as you sleep.

Mirrors should be avoided in bedrooms as it can reflect your image while you are asleep and this could drain you. Mirrors opposite the bed can attract a third party to the relationship.

Television, computers, electric radios, clocks are best to be as possible away from you while you sleep.

Always remember to make your bed when you wake up in the morning to get your day off to a good start. An unfinished bed has the possibility to get you off to an incomplete and messy start in the morning.

Always open your bedroom windows at least once 15 minutes a day to allow fresh Qi to come in, if not you will be sleeping with stale Qi every night. And if that happens, then how can you expect your life to bring in more good fortune to come to you?

'Qi' in Fengshui

What is Qi?

Qi is one of the fundamental elements of Feng Shui. Qi or life force energy cannot be seen or heard. Qi is the essence of all things. There are many things we cannot see and it exists, for example electricity. It connects with everyone and everything. It is the energy that sustains life and spirit. It is some sort of life energy that can be found in the air.

Feng Shui is based on the flow of Qi, with the interactions of the five elements and the yin and yang. Qi can be both creative and destructive and an over abundance can be damaging. If one lacks qi in the surrounding of their homes or space it can leads to depression or illnesses and will not function to its full potential. This is what we term as blocked Qi.

When the flow of Qi in your home or office is out of balance, you may experience difficulties in financial problems, relationships, illnesses and many more. By using Feng Shui, it allows us to harness the good Qi and avoid the bad Qi in our environment and in so doing it also provides the opportunities to accomplish our goals and be able to make informed decisions that affect us positively.
